Hyper-insulinaemia or higher insulin levels may directly increase the risk of CHD by promoting atherogenesis and indirectly by influencing lipid metabolism. Elevated insulin concentrations are associated with increased triglycerides, increased HDL and HDL2 and increased LDL.
